Abstract

A variety of extreme cosmic phenomena are powered by
rotating black holes. One mechanism that has been studied
extensively is energy extraction of the black hole spin energy
by magnetic fields. I will describe recent observational and
theoretical progress in the study of black hole engines, and
explain in simple terms how this black hole activation mechanism
works.
