Abstract
The large photon flux generated by relativistic heavy ions accelerated in the LHC gives rise to photon matter interactions, which can be studied with the ATLAS detector. In particular, the equivalent photons of one ion’s electric field can be used as energetic probes to look into the structure of the opposite direction nucleus. These types of processes are challenging to robustly classify especially when the interaction does not result in nuclear breakup. In this talk we will identify some of these challenges, and attempt to address them by looking at the topology of photo-nuclear di-jet events in the ATLAS detector.
