Abstract

The proton charge radius determined in high precision spectroscopy of muonic hydrogen 1 2 revealed a 6sigma deviation from that obtained in hydrogen spectroscopy and electron proton scattering The radius puzzle was recently strengthened by a subsequent experiment in muonic deuterium 3 This puzzle raises intriguing questions about lepton universality It has stimulated a series of spectroscopy measurements in other light muonic atoms aiming to accurately determine the charge radii of light nuclei In this talk we shall discuss the proton radius puzzle and the importance of nuclear structure effects in the experimental extraction of nuclear charge radii see e g 4 1 R Pohl et al Nature 466 213 2010 2 A Antognini et al Science 339 417 2013 3 R Pohl et al Science 353 669 2016 4 C Ji N Nevo Dinur S Bacca and N Barnea Phys Rev Lett 111 143402 2013 Refreshments are served at 15:15
