Abstract

First it will be explained how to build an effective Matlab software for calculation of gain current relation and simulation of non linear light propagation in diode amplifiers and lasers Application of the software to research on filamentation will be demonstrated It will be shown that three orders of filamentation appear in tapered flared amplifiers within the typical ranges of the parameters The causes of different types of filamentation will be elucidated Practical guidelines for filamentation suppression will be suggested Second a novel type of Large Core Single Mode Optical Fiber will be described The light confinement in the fiber is achieved via a transmission anti resonance in a thin cladding layer with high refractive index The layer possesses an array of holes drawn in the propagation direction The array is periodic in the azimuthal direction forming a kind of photonic crystal The light then sees two channels to penetrate the cladding: direct transmission and holes assisted transmission A destructive interference between these channels is achieved at an appropriate combination of fiber parameters Computer simulations of a fiber with the core of 100 m showed effectively single mode operation attenuation of all the different modes was at least 4 orders of magnitude larger than of the TE01 mode Required fabrication tolerances were calculated and the fabrication seems feasible
