Abstract

Parametric down conversion PDC of x rays into ultraviolet UV or optical radiation is a second order nonlinear process in which pump photons are converted into x ray and UV or optical photon pairs The effect depends on the charge distribution and on the binding energies of the valence electrons hence provides information about the microscopic structure of materials with atomic scale resolution 1 4 This technique is atomic selective and can be used for exploring properties of light atoms surrounded by heavy atoms in crystalline samples I will describe the first demonstration of x rays into optical PDC 3 and new results from experiments on PDC of x rays into UV with a laboratory x ray tube at high energy resolution 4 I will discuss the possibilities to use the technique to explore properties of crystals such as Fermi energies plasmons and the density of states I will discuss the possibilities to measure the responses of valence electrons to external strain optical excitations and applied voltage References 1 I Freund Chem Phys Lett 12 583 1972 2 K Tamasaku K Sawada E Nishibori and T Ishikawa Nat Phys 7 705 2011 3 A Schori1 C B mer D Borodin S P Collins B Detlefs M Moretti Sala S Yudovich and S Shwartz accepted to Phys Rev Lett 4 D Borodin S Levy and S Shwartz App Phys Lett 110 131101 2017
