Abstract

Recent developments for cooling and trapping atoms using a nearby nanofabricated surface have markedly improved the efficiency of experiments utilizing Bose Einstein condensates with such surfaces called atom chips Whereas our current experiments allow BEC generation only once per minute initial trap loading from cold atom beam sources has enabled A BEC to be achieved in less than one second We present Monte Carlo simulations for modeling and comparing two of the most widely used cold atom source configurations compatible with BEC experiments in our laboratory We then extend this model to include the complex level structure of the Rb 87 atom in order to better represent its interaction with the optical and magnetic fields and compare our simulated results with experimental measurements
