Abstract

Kaons have historically played a central role in establishing the foundations of the Standard Model, including the GIM mechanism and the discovery of CP violation.
Recent progress has highlighted new opportunities for kaon physics, centered around the decay $K(t)\to\mu^+\mu^-$, from which clean CKM information can be attained. An independent determination of CKM parameters from kaon physics would be a unique and crucial test of the SM CKM structure, so far verified mostly using B physics. I will review new theory advancements within the SM and beyond it, and touch upon experimental directions that are currently being explored, holding the potential for a multi-purpose program.
