Abstract

For the last 50 years deep inelastic scattering DIS of leptons off hadrons and nuclei has been a fundamental tool to explore matter at the smallest scales I will start by discussing the present status and successes of this kind of experiments with emphasis on the legacy from those at the HERA accelerator at DESY Then I will focus on the existing open problems in view of the results and future possibilities at the LHC at CERN Finally I will present the facilities that are being proposed to extend DIS Refreshmen
