Abstract
An ongoing major concern now and over the last few decades is the smuggling of nuclear materials and explosives as part of nuclear and or conventional terrorism A variety of technologies and systems were and are being researched developed and some implemented They cover resolution energy X ray transmission radiography dual X ray radiography X ray transmission spectroscopy neutron and high energy induced fission neutron capture and inelastic gamma rays nuclear resonance absorption and scattering and more The physics and engineering principles of active interrogation via neutrons and high energy x rays for detection of nuclear and other contrabands such as explosives and drugs smuggled via conveyances will be reviewed Recent published results an future trends will be presented
