Abstract

Entanglement entropy has become a useful concept for understanding many body systems I will begin this colloquium by reviewing some basic notions such as the area law of entanglement on which multiple numerical algorithms such as DMRG are based as well as powerful results on the scaling of entanglement in one dimensional critical systems One of the fascinating recent developments that I will focus on are a new class of experiments based on interference of two identical many body systems demonstrating that entanglement of many body systems can actually be measured in the laboratory Based on these advances I will introduce a novel symmetry decomposition of entanglement Apart from the fact that this symmetry decomposition can be both computed and measured I will discuss profound effects that it might have in topological states of matter If time permits I will discuss logarithmic negativity a measure of entanglement in mixed states which can be experimentally measured and symmetry decomposed Refreshments are served at 15:15
