Abstract

Collisionless shocks are found almost everywhere in the plasma Universe but only in the heliosphere their characteristics are measured directly in in situ observations These continuously improving measurements provide a test bed for any theory of the collisionless shock structure Ions play the most important role in shock physics: they shape the shock and provide all necessary energy for heating acceleration and magnetic field amplification Understand ion dynamics in the shock front and the back influence of ions on the fields is the central problem of the collisionless shock theory
