Abstract

In this talk I will review recent attempts to combine ultracold samples of atomic gasses and single trapped ions When ions are trapped in Paul traps the RF fields that are involved in the trapping mechanism can pump energy into the combined system and lead to heating In a recent experiment we have cooled a single ion to the quantum ground state of the trap and measured the subsequent dynamics due to collisions with the surrounding micro Kelvin atomic cloud
