Abstract

Abstract: The theory of Kozai Oscillations of Hierarchical three body systems involves two basic approximations 1 Expanding the interaction to leading order in the small hierarchy parameter inner orbit size outer orbit size 2 Averaging the equations of motion over the inner and the outer orbit Corrections to both approximations have been recently shown to lead to significant effects especially when the prospect for close approaches is considered e g for collisions of White Dwarfs to produce supernovae I will map out some of these corrections and discuss a new finding that the breakdown of the averaging procedure significantly affects the long term evolution This is the same problem that caused Newton Euler and D Alembert to erroneously calculate the precession of the moon by a factor of about 2 We now generalised the correction originally introduced by Clairaut in 1749 to arbitrary inclinations and eccentricities needed for Kozai oscillations
