Development and Characterization of a 2D MOT System

Quantum science and technology utilizes cold atoms as a major source of quantum systems for quantum applications. This requires developing better sources (e.g. in terms of flux). In this project we develop and characterize a source for a continuous beam of cold atoms, based on a two-dimentional (2D) laser cooling scheme known as a 2D magneto-optical trap.
The student will learn basic concepts of lasers, optics, vacuum, atomic physics, and laser cooling.
