DThe
sudden but very temporary rise in atmospheric carbon 14 in the year 775
is discussed. The basic physics behind cosmic ray production by
astrophysical shocks and cosmogenic carbon 14 production is reviewed.
Various astrophysical scenarios have been proposed to account for the
775 event, and they are described and critiqued.
