A Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a phase transition which occurs when a macroscopic amount of atoms occupies the ground state of the system. In our case, the phase transition takes place when taking energy (cooling) from an atomic cloud (of bosons) with a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The goal of my work was to create a BEC in an Atom Chip setup, so that the interaction between atoms and surfaces may be measured and manipulated and so that advanced atom optics may be applied (e.g. for atom interferometers).
