Subject of reaserch: The Dynamics of Channeled

Recent decade of intensive investigations of high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) resulted in enormous progress in our understanding of the properties of vortex matter in type-II superconductors. High thermal energies, strong anisotropy, short coherence length, and relatively weak pinning in HTSC lead to coexistence of many phases in the vortex matter phase diagram and enable transitions between them under changing experimental conditions. The same factors cause pronounced activated movements of vortices, resulting in significant dissipation in the superconducting state.
The purpose of the research is to characterize, experimentally, the nucleation and movement of vortices and vortex bundles in a channeled zone within an YBCO thin film. The emphasis is on effects due to transport current alone (no external field). The possible contribution in the subject is a basic understanding of the mechanism of vortex movement and possibly providing a measure of control over this movement. This could lead to a number of technological developments, among them: microwave detectors with sensitivity in the order of Planck constant, and logical circuits such as a transistor.
