Random Matrix Theory and Combinatorics: a Riemann-Hilbert Approach Percy Deift, Courant Institute This is a series of lectures on the application of techniques from the theory of integrable systems to problems in Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and Combinatorics. The Riemann-Hilbert Problem (RHP) plays a central role. Lecture 1: 2:00, SUNDAY MARCH 14, Room -101 at Building 58 Here the speaker will give a brief survey of the scope of the modern theory of integrable systems, followed by something of the history and remarkably broad range of applications of RMT. A particular version of the Universality Conjecture (UC) is introduced. The proof of this Conjecture is given, at least in part, in the following 2 lectures. Lecture 2: 4:00, SUNDAY MARCH 14, Room 201 at Building 58 In this lecture the speaker will introduce various methods and ideas from the theory of integrable systems, and elsewhere, that are needed in the solution of UC. This includes RHP's, orthogonal polynomials, equilibrium measures, and the steepest-descent method for RHP's introduced by X.Zhou and P.Deift. Lecture 3: 10:00, TUESDAY MARCH 16, Room -101 at Building 58 Here UC is proved using the methods introduced in lecture 2. Lecture 4: 2:30, TUESDAY MARCH 16, Room -101 at Building 58 In this the final lecture the speaker will show how various asymptotic problems in combinatorics can be analyzed using Riemann-Hilbert theory. The techniques here have much in common with the techniques introduced in lectures 2 and 3. The speaker will focus, in particular, on Ulam's problem for the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation. ............................................................................. _______________________________________________ Physics Department Homepage: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/ Campus map and directions: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/directions.html More information on [Phys-seminars]: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/phys_boards.html From phys at bgumail.bgu.ac.il Tue Mar 9 15:04:02 2004 From: phys at bgumail.bgu.ac.il (Physics Homepage) Date: Tue Feb 17 13:18:12 2009 Subject: [Phys-seminars] 2004-03-18 NLD seminar Message-ID: <404DC0C2.7040801@bgumail.bgu.ac.il> Nonlinear dynamics seminar on: A Periodically Stimulated Limit Cycle Speaker: Dr. Nataly Gulko, Physics department, BGU Thursday, 18/03/04 at 11:00, the Physics club (room 002, building 29). _______________________________________________ Physics Department Homepage: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/ Campus map and directions: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/directions.html More information on [Phys-seminars]: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/phys_boards.html From phys at bgumail.bgu.ac.il Tue Mar 9 15:08:27 2004 From: phys at bgumail.bgu.ac.il (Physics Homepage) Date: Tue Feb 17 13:18:12 2009 Subject: [Phys-seminars] 2004-03-14 Biomedical Physics Seminar Message-ID: <404DC1CB.8060307@bgumail.bgu.ac.il> Biomedical Physics Seminar DATE: 14-03-2004 TIME: 2:00pm (Sun) PLACE: Physics club (Building 29, room 002) TITLE: Trends in Energy Medicine: the use of magnetic and far infrared technologies in prevention and therapy. SPEAKER: Mrs. Reisie Miller, ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: This seminar will outline the philosophical, theoretical and practical aspects of the growing trend to view the body as an energy system as opposed to a biochemical one. This energy system is seen to interact with, and be dependent upon a variety of natural energies emanating from the earth and the cosmos. Modern technolgies and lifestyle are believed to interfere with the body\'s natural energy system, causing imbalances, which result in a host of ailments. We will discuss new and simple energy-based technologies which are being used to correct these imbalances and to promote health. _______________________________________________ Physics Department Homepage: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/ Campus map and directions: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/directions.html More information on [Phys-seminars]: http://www.bgu.ac.il/physics/phys_boards.html From hbaruch at bgumail.bgu.ac.il Wed Mar 10 09:08:53 2004 From: hbaruch at bgumail.bgu.ac.il (hbaruch@bgumail.bgu.ac.il) Date: Tue Feb 17 13:18:12 2009 Subject: [Phys-seminars] 2004-03-15 Condensed Matter Seminar Message-ID: <200403100708.JAA6114916@tzin.bgu.ac.il> Condensed Matter Seminar DATE: 15-03-2004 TIME: 11:30am (Mon) PLACE: Physics club (Building 29, room 002) TITLE: Manganites: from the colossal to the giant SPEAKER: Prof. Lior Klein, Department of Physics, Bar-Ilan University ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: From nano at bgumail.bgu.ac.il Wed Mar 10 21:29:14 2004 From: nano at bgumail.bgu.ac.il (Nano) Date: Tue Feb 17 13:18:12 2009 Subject: [Phys-seminars] 2004-03-17 nanotechnology workshop Message-ID: <009c01c406d5$f91bb5c0$1b0e4884@vectra1> Nanotechnology workshop, Wednesday March 17, 12:00 Chemistry Department seminar room (building 29, room 306) refreshments will be served starting 11:30 Title : Growing Nano-diamonds Under Cover Speaker: Hoffman Alon Technion -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thursday, 22/04/04 at 11:00, the Physics club (room 002, building 29). Abstract: After classifying the various instabilities in catalytic systems, those due to kinetic effects, which appear at low- and high-pressures over a relatively narrow domain of parameters, and those due to thermal effects, which are quite generic, we focus on two types of flow reactors (cross-flow and loop reactors). In both cases the feed is distributed along the system, with open-ended or periodic boundary conditions, respectively. Application of linear and weakly-nonlinear analysis for the cross-flow reactor, demonstrate the existence of spatially-periodic (or even 'aperiodic') stationary patterns, moving waves and complex spatiotemporal patterns. Asymptotes of loop reactors can attain forced- or spontaneous-moving pulses but when the feed is spatially discretized we may find a complex structure that is reminiscent of the forced-oscillator problem. Possible applications of these pattern formation are discussed. In this case the conductance is controlled by a single hop between the two sites located on the opposite banks of the contact. For variable range hopping (VRH) the choice of the pair depends on temperature, and the temperature dependence of the conductance exhibits exponentially large mesoscopic fluctuations. For large enough voltage the conductance is strongly nonlinear and also exhibits giant fluctuations as a result of \"switching\" between different \"critical pairs\". It also exhibits regions of negative differential resistance due to resonant tunneling effective at some \"resonant\" values of the bias. At higher biases the nonlinear I(V) curve tends to a smooth one (I proportional to V2). SPEAKER: Nina V. Agrinskaya,, Ioffe Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: The hole transport in heavily doped 2D GaAs-AlGaAs structures was studied in a broad temperature region. At lower doping levels the samples exhibited hopping transport over the states within the Coulomb gap. The features of the Coulomb gap indicate an important role of the correlated hopping. At high doping levels the low temperature behavior of the conductivity demonstrate the weak localization behavior. At the same time the high temperature behavior of both conductivity and Hall coefficient allows to suggest that the crossover from the weak to strong localization takes place when the impurity band is still splitted from the valence band. SPEAKER: Liubov Kuzin, Department of Chemistry Ben-Gurion University of the Negev ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: The mucociliary system is responsible for clearing inhaled particles and pathogens from the airways. Highly cooperative beating of cilia at high frequencies enables the mucociliary system to carry relatively large objects, at remarkable velocity. One of the most potent stimulators in the mucociliary system is extracellular ATP (ATPo), which acts by releasing calcium ions from internal stores and by activating calcium influx. Ciliary activity is significantly influenced by chemical and physical properties of the liquid medium in which the cilia beat. We studied the effect of changes in extracellular pH (pHo) on the ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and [Ca2+]i before and after stimulation by ATPo. The results show that although the changes in pHo between 6.2-8.5 have not significantly affected CBF before stimulation by ATPo, there was a significant effect of pHo on the cell response after ATPo stimulation. Moderate alkalization of pHo (pH 8.0) positively affected the ATPo stimulated ciliary response, while acidification of pHo (pH6.2) reduced ciliary response after ATPo. The effect of pHo and ATPo on intracellular pH (pHi) was studied using confocal microscopy with the pH-sensitive dye carboxy SNARF1. It was found that pHo dictate the pHi changes near the apical membrane.Application of ATPo causes the cytosolic acidification near the apical membrane. One problem is how to detect correlations. I will show that many-body correlations can be probed by atomic noise in the absorption image of an expanding gas cloud. In particular this technique would reveal pairing in fermion superfluids and spin ordered states of multi- component bosons. Current experiments can also explore new regimes of quantum dynamics. The most popular versions are based on fluorescence spectroscopy, while our laboratory has pioneered a number of novel methods, including, chemiluminescence-based fiber-optic immunosensors and bioluminescence-based whole-cell bioreporter biosensors. We have demonstrated that a number of immobilization strategies may be utilized for the coupling of bioreceptors to the sensing region of the fiber-optic biosensor. For instance, in addition to using classical silane chemistries, we have synthesized and demonstrated the use of a silane-benzophenone as an ideal substrate for the UV-induced attachment of bioreceptors on the endface region of a fiber-optic core. We have also documented the use of calcium-alginate as an entrapment matrix of living bioreporter bacteria at the tip of a fiber-optic biosensor as adlayers adsorbed on the fiber core. We further im proved the strategy by synthesizing biotin-modified alginate, so as to produce biotin-coated calcium-alginate beads. These were then shown to nicely attach to fiber-optic core tips, previously modified with avidin via a silane linker. Finally, we have fabricated 'electroptodes' consisting in surface-conductive fiber-optics, upon which can be electropolymerized, a polymeric affinity thin film. This film is then used as the binding material for proteinaceous bioreceptor entities, such as specific immunoglobulins (cholera anti-toxin) or antigen (Hepatitis C antigen). The electroconductive surface property of the fiber-optic was created by allowing the deposition of a thin layer (200 nm) of indium tin oxide onto fiber-optic cores. The existence of the ITO layer was shown by energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis and its morphology imaged by scanning electron microscopy. Thereafter, biotin-pyrrole or benzophenone-pyrrole monomers (synthesized, and characterized by the laboratory o f Dr. Serge Cosnier, UJF, Grenoble, France) were electro-polymerized into poly(pyrrole-biotin) or poly(pyrrole-benzophenone) thin films. Fibers produced with this method, were shown to be resilient, having fairly low non-specific binding capacity, and the fiber-optic immunosensors were able to positively identify some of the serologically negative HCV (core & NS3) from our local clinical laboratory, thanks to our greater sensitivity power, while our data was indeed confirmed positive for viral presence as HCV-RNA positive, by RT-PCR with further confirmation by checking the patients' clinical history. SPEAKER: Itzhak Ergaz, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Department of Chemistry. ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: Preparation of novel benzoxazocines and benzoxazonines and stereochemical studies on eight and nine-membered ring analogues of Nefopam.Nefopam hydrochloride (1) – a non-narcotic analgesic drug, shows a few isomers in equilibrium on dissolution in a solvent (e.g. CD2Cl2).A study of a large number of analogues of nefopam was performed in order to estimate and understand the structural, steric and electronic constraints which may influence the three dimensional structure of eight and nine-membered ring molecules in crystal and in solution. The information which was obtained from this study will enable in the future to study the relationship between the three dimensional structure of a molecule and its biological activity. In eight and nine-membered ring molecules there are multiple conformations because of dynamic processes like atom movement (atom flip) and benzo-ring flip that are energetically favorable at the room temperature. Conformations could be stable or unstable, due t o the influence of substituents on the ring and to heteroatoms as part of the ring itself. Substituents like methyl can be used as a factor to stabilize the conformation acting as an anchor against movement when they are placed in the correct position in the molecule. As part of this study, we performed conformational analysis of known and unknown compounds (2, 3, 4 for example) prepared in our lab. The main conformation in solution was determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy using NOE and the relationship between coupling constants and dihydral angles. The conformation in the solid state was studied by 13C NMR cpmas and X-ray. The stereochemical factors that affect a molecule in the crystal and in solution are different one from another. In solution, the main interaction is between the molecules and the solvent whereas in the crystal, the main interaction is between the molecules themselves. We found out that part of the analogues of nefopam (4) have different conformations in solution and in solid state, while for the other (1, 2, 3) the conformations were similar in solution and in the crystal. Analogues with various numbers of methyl groups as anchors on different positions of the ring were found to have different conformations. For example, compound 1 has in crystal the BB (boat-boat) conformation, whereas compound 2 appears in the TCC (twist-chair-chair) conformation. Their understanding is needed for developing quantitative models of granular flow. I will concentrate on three instabilities which result from the inelasticity of the particle collisions. The first one is a van der Waals-like phase-separation instability which occurs already in the simplest setting: an ensemble of inelastic hard disks driven by a rapidly vibrating side wall in the absence of gravity. The second instability is thermal granular convection which develops in the same prototypical system, but in the presence of gravity. Convection in a horizontal layer of a “classical” fluid heated from below, known as the Rayleigh-Benard convection, is a famous example of pattern formation outside of equilibrium. Investigation of the analogous instability in a granular fluid provides new insights into the physics of granular matter. The third one is oscillatory instability which we have recently discovered in an ensemble of inelastically colliding disks driven by two opposite rapidly vibrating walls at zero gravity. All these symmetry-breaking instabilities can be described by a coarse-grained theory: granular hydrodynamics. The theory is supported by molecular dynamic simulations. SPEAKER: Revital Halevy,, Department of Chemistry Ben-Gurion University of the Negev ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: Membrane binding and permeation of indolicidin analogs were studied using newly developed lipid/polydiacetylene (PDA) biomimetic membrane assay. The assay system is comprised of lipid/PDA vesicle assemblies composed of lipids embedded within a matrix of polydiacetylene that together mimic membrane environment. In particular, these vesicles undergo visible blue-red transformation induced by varied membrane processes such as peptide-membrane interaction. The assay can successfully evaluate both the binding to lipid/water interface and the penetration of peptides into the hydrophobic core of the bilayer. Importantly, these properties provide information that can further help to understand the biological activity of antimicrobial peptides for development of new antibacterial drugs. The QCB mechanical flexibility together with the possibility of excitation of its constituents by an external electric field makes QCB on of the most attractive architectures for designing molecular-electronic circuits. Capacitive interaction in QCB crosses conserves the Luttinger liquid fixed point, and possesses a rich Bose-type excitation spectrum (plasmon modes) beyond it. Due to an intermediate in a sense QCB dimensionality, its spectrum demonstrates 1D or 2D properties depending on the direction of the wave vector in the 2D Brillouin zone. These spectral features can be observed in a series of possible optical experiments and manifest themselves as a one- to two-dimensional crossover. We will mainly discuss experimental situations in which these unusual physical properties can be realized. The most pronounced manifestations of the crossover are an appearance of doublet and triplet lines instead of a set of single lines (infrared absorption and ultraviolet scattering on QCB), and appearance of additional Landau damping regions (attenuation of surface waves in a substrate coupled to QCB). In these two events, which may result in respiratory distress syndrome, the decisions regarding whether to proceed with the birth are influenced by the state of the fetal lungs. Respiratory distress syndrome is caused by the collapse of the alveoli in the newborn\'s lungs. Alveoli collapse is prevented in mature lungs by the presence of lung surfactant. Presently, the state of the fetal lung is determined by an invasive test of the amniotic fluid. A novel approach for the evaluation of fetal lung maturity, based the intrinsic fluorescence polarization ratio of the amniotic fluid, will be presented. In vitro measurements of the intrinsic fluorescence polarization ratio indicate a clear dichotomy: high values for young pregnancies and low values for mature pregnancies. The new method has the potential to be a non-invasive procedure as the excitation of the amniotic fluid and the collection of its fluorescence emission can be performed through the intact amniotic membranes From ramyb at bgumail.bgu.ac.il Mon Jun 14 10:05:20 2004 From: ramyb at bgumail.bgu.ac.il (ramyb@bgumail.bgu.ac.il) Date: Tue Feb 17 13:18:13 2009 Subject: [Phys-seminars] 2004-06-17 Physics Colloquium Message-ID: <200406140705.KAA21255764@tzin.bgu.ac.il> Physics Colloquium DATE: 17-06-2004 TIME: 3:30pm (Thu) PLACE: Building 34, room 010 TITLE: Status of the ATLAS Detector; the Largest Experiment in the world SPEAKER: Professor Giora Mikenberg, Department of Particle Physics, The Weizmann Institute. , More information on the ATLAS detector can be found at http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/Welcome.html ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: Refreshments are served at 3:20pm This is the last colloquium of the semester, and should be particularly interesting. Title: A minimal model for C Elegans forward locomotion Abstract We study a minimal model of the neural control for C Elegans forward locomotion. The model relies on graded potential neurons, and lacks any synapt ic inhibition. Rather, sustained undulations are shown to propagate down the worm in a robust manner, with a simple circuit of gap junctions and capacitive delays. Antiphase oscillations are achieved, not by means of central pattern generators, but rather via feedback from stretch receptors along the body. Computer optimisation was used to seek working parameters. In this talk, we present the model, simulations thereof and possible implications for the neurobiology of the C Eleganslocomotion system. If you want to speak with Netta during her visit at BGU, please call David Golomb, 08-6477325, golomb@bgu.ac.il . Late time radio emission in SNe is usually attributed to a strong interaction between the SN shell and the circumstellar medium. This explanation is, however, hard to reconcile with the rapid rise in the radio flux together with the optically thin spectrum in SN 2001em. On the other hand, these features arise naturally from a relativistic jet viewed off-axis. The high X-ray luminosity provides an independent and more robust constraint: it requires $\\sim 10^{51}$ erg in mildly relativistic ejecta. The source should therefore currently have a large angular size ($\\gtrsim 2$ mas) which could be resolved in the radio with VLBA. The presence of a relativistic outflow in SN 2001em would have interesting implications: it would suggest that several percent of SNe Ib/c produce mildly relativistic jets, with an initial Lorentz factor $\\Gamma_0\\gtrsim 2$, while the fraction that produce GRB jets (with $\\Gamma_0\\gtrsim 100$) is $\\sim 100$ times smaller. This could considerably increase the number of expected transients in the radio, and to a lesser extent in the optical and X-rays, if there is a continuous distribution in $\\Gamma_0$. This may also give credence to the idea that some core collapse SNe are triggered by bipolar jets. SPEAKER: Dr Omri Gat, EE Department Technion ABSTRACT/COMMENTS: The statistical steady state of the noisy dynamics of lasers with an absorptive nonlinearity is mapped to equilibrium fluctuations of a scalar field with an unstable self-interaction and a global power constraint. The free energy is calculated using mean field arguments, which are shown to be exact in the thermodymic limit. The outcome is a simple but nontrivial phase diagram of passive mode locking, which resolves the long standing issue of the \"second\" threshold of passive mode locking in lasers. These dipoles arise from the correlated motion of the atoms in the crystal potential. This zero-point motion is synchronized so that the dipolar interaction energy is minimized. The ground-state of these dipoles breaks the bcc symmetry and leads to a marked softening and several new phonon modes. Some of these predicted effects have been recently observed. The aim of this investigation is to demonstrate the metallization of these composites under high pressure. Structure analysis was done by using IR spectroscopy and Raman scattering in comparison to space group analysis. The layered, low density tetragonal structure of these monoxides under ambient pressure, suggest that it may transform into denser structure under high pressure, followed by a large decrease of the indirect gap and transition to metallic state. This is identified by IR spectroscopy and supported by theoretical Fano model.
