Why are AGN so similar?

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) span a range of 10^8 in luminosity, despite that their continuum and line emission properties are remarkably similar. In this talk I will briefly review earlier work on the mechanism which may lead to similar line emission, and discuss new work on the mechanism which produces similar continuum emission.
