Atomic and Molecular Processes in Strong Fields at the LCLS X-ray Laser

The Stanford Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the SLAC
National Accelerator Laboratory is the world’s fi rst hard x-ray free
electron laser. Atomic and molecular physics experiments at LCLS have
concentrated on studies of fundamental processes of photoionization and
subsequent relaxation. The signifi cant dynamical time scales involved are
on the order of a few femtoseconds. Several strong-field and nonlinear
effects have now been documented, and I will review the early results as
well as the status of ongoing work.
